Until a few years ago, catching a sunset wasn’t high on my list of must-dos in Martha’s Vineyard. That all changed one evening when a friend took me to watch the Menemsha sunset and get dinner.
I was stunned by the number of people circling the parking lot, hoping to secure a spot. Tour buses and cabs dropped off crowds eager to witness one of the island’s most spectacular shows: the sunset.
Menemsha, a charming fishing village located on the northwest end of Chilmark, is famed for its cotton candy skies and stunning sunsets overlooking the Vineyard Sound.

12 Must-Know Tips for the Best Menemsha Sunset Experience
1. Spend the Entire Day at Menemsha Beach
If you’re planning a beach day, why not spend it soaking up the sun in Menemsha? The beach itself is small, but it’s perfect for families. You have a beautiful ocean view, and my favorite is watching the fishing boats go in and out of the harbor.
If you’re planning on driving, try arriving at the beach early to secure a parking spot nearby. Alternatively, you can take the bus. The Vineyard Transport Authority is a reliable mode of transportation.
2. Arrive Early
Menemsha is a popular spot for sunset watchers; I recommend arriving early to secure a good viewing spot.
Aim to get there at least 2 hours before sunset to find parking and set up your area. Remember, you’ll compete for parking spots with others there for the same reason: to watch the sunset.
Additionally, beachgoers take their sweet time loading their cars and rounding up their children, which takes longer than expected.
This also gives you time to explore the village and soak in the tranquil atmosphere before the main event.
Insider Tip: If you don’t have a car, take the VTA bus #12 Menemsha Sunset Bus.
3. Additional Parking Available at Menemsha Deli
If you are panicking because you can’t find parking, don’t sweat it! Here’s a little secret: You can park at the Menemsha Deli only after the deli closes for the day.
I wouldn’t advise parking there during business hours unless you plan on purchasing food from the establishment.
Tabor House Road lot also has parking available. Once you park, you will need to catch the VTA #12 bus to the Memensha harbor.
4. Check the Menemsha Sunset Time
Sunset times vary throughout the year, so check the local sunset schedule. Arriving early ensures you will experience the magical moment when the sun meets the horizon.

5. Bring Comfortable Seating
While many enjoy standing or sitting on the beach, comfortable seating will enhance your experience. Pack a lightweight beach chair or a cozy blanket to sit on. This way, you can fully enjoy the sunset.
6. Pack a Picnic
Your sunset experience has to be top-notch, so packing a picnic with your favorite foods and snacks is a must! Alternatively, Larsen’s Fish Market and Menemsha Fish Market offer incredibly yummy and fresh seafood.
During the peak months (July and August), placing your order ahead of time is recommended, as the wait can feel like forever.
Some of my favorites are steamed lobster, lobster rolls, little necks, chowder, and oysters. Larsen’s and Menemsha Fish Market are fantastic, and you can’t go wrong!
Remember to bring along some wine or your favorite drinks to toast the sunset. There are several liquor stores on the island. Here are a few of my favorites: Jim’s Package Store, Our Market, Tony’s Market, Rosewater Wine & Spirits and Vineyard Wine & Cheese Shop.

7. Dress in Layers
Even during the summer, the temperature can drop significantly as the sun sets. Bring along a sweater or light jacket to stay warm and comfortable.
Layers allow you to adjust your clothing as needed, ensuring you can focus on the beauty of the sunset rather than the chill in the air.

8. Take Pictures
As the sun starts to descend over the Vineyard Sound, be sure to capture the stunning colors and the moment with a camera or smartphone. This will allow you to take beautiful photos and videos to remember the experience.
Consider using a tripod for steady shots, especially if you plan to stay for the twilight moments after sunset. In addition to taking photos and videos, I like to imagine the scene in my mind to fully capture its essence.
9. Clap and Cheer
If it’s your first time catching the sunset in Menemsha, don’t be alarmed when everyone starts cheering and clapping as the sun goes down.
It’s tradition and a Vineyard thing. Make a wish and add visiting Menemsha to your Martha’s Vineyard bucket list for next summer!
10. Stay for the Twilight
The beauty of Menemsha doesn’t end with the sunset. After the sun has dipped below the horizon, stay a little longer to enjoy the twilight. This is when the sky transforms into a canvas of deep blues, purples, orange and pinks, providing a serene and magical end to your evening.
11. Respect the Environment
Many people adore Menemsha, so please respect the environment. Bring disposable bags for trash and follow local guidelines to help keep the area clean. Removing your trash ensures that future visitors can also enjoy the natural beauty of this special place.

Before or after sunset, take some time to explore Menemsha’s local culture. Visit the fishing docks, chat with local fishermen, and browse the charming shops. This will add depth to your visit and allow you to experience the village’s unique character and traditions.
