30 photos to inspire you to visit St Lucia
Located in the Lesser Antilles chain in the Caribbean, Saint Lucia is the only country in the world named after a woman, Saint Lucy of Syracuse. The island was first known as “Louanalao” by the Arawak people.
Castries
While the island has no shortage of fabulous hotels and resorts to pick from, we decided to stay in this spectacular Airbnb 10 mins from downtown Castries.
Every morning, I woke up early to the sounds of birds excitedly chirping and what sounded like them engaging in an electrifying conversation. I sat quietly, admiring the colors and shapes of the leaves on the trees and plants, reflecting, and giving thanks.
Starting my day sitting in nature and being alone with my thoughts was a significant highlight, especially seeing how I am always on the move. I am guilty of rarely taking the time to slow down and cherish the moments that matter. Eventually, I came to appreciate the stray cats that wandered the property and sauntered past me, reminding me that I was the guest, not them!
We spent most of our time in Castries, the capital and largest city in Saint Lucia. Before heading out on our adventures for the day, we visited Castries Central Market. This market is one of the largest markets in Saint Lucia, filled with over 300 vendors selling everything from fresh fruits, vegetables, spices, jewelry, clothing, and crafts.
The first day we visited the market, we noticed vendors selling homemade food in the back of the building. Even though most vendors sold out of food quickly, we found a vendor with just enough food for four people. We gladly purchased plates of food for a whopping $6 each. The food was so tasty and seasoned to perfection!
On another day, we had our pick of ripe soursop, which was such a treat seeing how I only see the fruit when I am home visiting family in Nigeria!
Aside from visiting Castries Central Market, other fun activities include:
- Enjoying Marigot Bay
- Hanging out at Rodney Bay
- Checking out Pigeon National Island and Beach (the beach is popular among the locals)
- Go bird watching at the Bois D’Orange Swamp, the Rain Forest, and Boriel’s Pond
- Ziplining
- Snorkeling or diving
Gros Islet Street Party
Every Friday night, Gros Islet, a quiet fisherman town located in the northern end of Saint Lucia, comes alive with the best street party you’ll ever experience. The street party is one of the most popular things to do on the island, and for a good reason.
We wanted to enjoy the fish fry and sample the freshly caught seafood but arrived too late. However, that didn’t stop us from having a blast. We had our choice of rum cocktails and Pitons. I love trying local beers and stuck with the Pitons. A highlight of the night was the DJs! They played the best Caribbean tunes and Afrobeats. Partying with locals and tourists alike until the wee hours of the morning was a memorable experience!
Land and Sea Tour
The following day we woke up still on a high from the night before and headed out for our next adventure. We met Kevernus and Garth with Knotty Girl Boat Tour at the Rodney Bay Marina for a day sea and to check out the sights in Soufrière. The town is the second largest on the island after Castries, located on the west coast part of the island and known for the up-close views of the Pitons, ocean, and rainforest.
We picked up several guests at nearby hotels and headed towards Soufrière. It was a hot day, and I was thankful for the lovely sea breeze. Coasting over the crystal blue waters and seeing the bottom of the ocean was insane.
During our tour, we visited the island’s top attractions, including Mariot Bay, Sugar Beach, local fishing villages, the famous Pitons, Sulfur Springs, and Toraille waterfall. Before returning to Castries, we stopped at Mama’s Kitchen for lunch. Located in the center of Soufrière, the food in Mama’s kitchen was out of this world! My lunch consisted of fish, rice, lentils, provisions (breadfruit and sweet potatoes), and salad.
On our way back to Castries, Kervenus was gracious enough to let me drive the boat! Seeing parts of the island by boat was a major highlight, especially how we spent most of our time in the island’s northern region. I couldn’t have asked for a better day.
Escape Spa at Stonefield Villa Resort
On our last day, we made the hour drive back to Soufrière and spent the afternoon getting pampered at the Escape Spa inside Stonefield Villa Resort. Stonefield Villa is one of the three Black-owned resorts in Saint Lucia. I originally wanted to stay at Stonefield but was outvoted.
My sister and I booked 90-minute couples massages. After our incredible massage, we were treated to glasses of wine and water. The service was exceptional, and I was blown away by the views of Pitons.
Other activities to check out in Soufrière:
- Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens & Mineral Baths
- Project Chocolat
- Piton Falls
- Superman Waterfall
- Anse Mamin

Saint Lucia was an absolute dream. It was my first time visiting the island and certainly won’t be the last! My pictures don’t do the island’s beauty justice, but I hope it gives you a glimpse of what’s in store for you when you visit.
