What Is a Turkish Hammam? (And Is It Worth It?)

A Turkish hammam is a traditional bathhouse designed for cleansing, relaxation, and ritual. The experience typically takes place across three main areas: a hot steam room centered around a large heated marble slab known as the göbek taşı, a warm room with basins or pools of varying temperatures, and a cooler space where you can relax afterward.
During your visit, you can expect services like deep exfoliating scrubs, foam washes, and time to soak and unwind.
The spaces themselves are just as memorable, often featuring stunning geometric patterns, marble interiors, and intricate tilework that reflect the region’s artistry.
Turkish hammams in Istanbul date back to the Roman and Byzantine bathhouses and later evolved with Islamic purification rituals during the Ottoman Empire.
By the 15th century, they had become an essential part of daily life, serving not only as places for hygiene but also as important social and cultural hubs.
Historically, Istanbul was home to more than 200 hammams, and today, around 60 are still in use. These bathhouses played a role in major life events, from weddings to births, and were also spaces for connection and community.
They’re closely tied to the concept of keyif, a Turkish word that reflects the art of slowing down and enjoying meaningful moments of rest.
So, is it worth it? Absolutely!
Experiencing a Turkish hammam is one of the most unique and culturally rich things you can do in Istanbul. Whether you’re drawn to the history, the relaxation, or just want the best exfoliating scrub of your life, it’s truly an experience you won’t forget.

What the Experience Is Like
Arrival
From the moment we arrived at Cağaloğlu Hamamı, we were greeted by walls adorned with portraits of notable visitors and celebrities. The reception area itself is stunning, filled with beautiful architecture, lush greenery, and the most inviting aroma.
Since the staff was expecting us, the check-in process was seamless. We were given a brief tour before being directed to the women’s changing area.
Changing Rooms

Inside the changing area, the staff was ready to assist us right away. Each of us was shown to a private room where we changed and were provided with a robe, disposable underwear, sandals, and a key.
The dim lighting and calm atmosphere instantly set the tone for relaxation. Once I was ready, I locked my room and was escorted to begin the experience.
The Scrub + Foam Ritual

We started in the heated marble room, where we were asked to relax and allow our bodies to warm up. It felt like a sauna, and within minutes, we were sweating out everything. It was midday on a weekday, so the space was quiet and peaceful, which made the experience even better.
After about 15 minutes, we moved to the pools to soften the skin in preparation for the scrub.
Next came exfoliation with a Kese glove (a one-time-use exfoliating mitt). I’ll be honest, I expected it to be intense, but it was surprisingly comfortable. The attendant was incredibly warm and professional, which immediately put me at ease.
The scrub itself lasted about 10 minutes and was followed by a 20-minute foam massage, which felt amazing after the exfoliation. It was easily one of the most relaxing parts of the entire experience.
Post-Treatment Relaxation

After the treatment, we were guided back to the relaxation area, which was beautifully set up around a central fountain surrounded by greenery.
We were served Turkish tea, homemade sherbet, and Turkish delight, the perfect way to wind down after the experience. I left feeling completely refreshed, relaxed, and honestly, renewed.
The Overall Vibe
The entire experience at Cağaloğlu Hamamı felt luxurious, peaceful, and deeply rooted in tradition. From the architecture to the service, everything was intentional and elevated.
My Honest Review

What I Loved
I’m always down for a good spa day, but this experience exceeded my expectations in every way. It was the perfect way to spend my last day in Istanbul, and I felt so lucky to have secured a reservation at one of the city’s most well-known Turkish hammams.
The service was exceptional from start to finish. The staff was warm, welcoming, and genuinely excited to share such an important part of their culture.
Everything felt intentional, from the ambiance to the level of care throughout the experience. I would easily rate this a 10/10 and highly recommend it to anyone looking for one of Istanbul’s best Turkish hammams.
What Surprised Me
What stood out most to me was how well the traditions have been preserved over time. The entire experience felt authentic and deeply rooted in history.
I was also surprised by how quiet it was. I expected a more crowded, communal environment, but instead, it felt calm and almost personalized, which made the experience even more enjoyable.
Who It’s Best For
This experience is perfect for travelers who want to immerse themselves in a traditional, historic hammam setting, especially one that’s been around for centuries.
That said, it’s important to be comfortable with some level of nudity, as parts of the experience take place without clothing.
Note: Cağaloğlu Hamamı does not offer couples packages, so keep that in mind if you’re traveling with a partner.

What to Expect at a Turkish Hammams in Istanbul
If it’s your first time visiting a hammam, knowing what to expect can make the experience feel much more comfortable and enjoyable.
What to Wear
Come dressed in comfortable clothing that’s easy to remove. Once inside, you’ll be provided with essentials like a robe, disposable underwear, and sandals, so you don’t need to bring much with you.
Gender-Separated vs. Mixed
Most Turkish hammams are gender-specific, with separate spaces and services for men and women. Staff members are also typically the same gender as the guests. However, there are a few Turkish hammams in Istanbul that offer mixed experiences, which are great for couples.
Tipping
Tipping isn’t mandatory, but it is appreciated. If you’re happy with your service, a tip of 10–20% is a good guideline.
Nudity Expectations
It’s important to know that some level of nudity is part of the experience. While disposable underwear is often provided, there may be moments where you are partially or fully nude in shared spaces. If this makes you uncomfortable, it’s something to consider before booking, and that’s completely okay.
Duration
Plan to spend at least 2 hours at the hammam. If you add services like masks or extended massages, your visit can easily run 3 hours or more.

Tips Before You Go to a Turkish Hammams in Istanbul
Before your hammam experience, here are a few helpful tips to make the most of it:
Don’t go right after eating
Arriving too full can make the heat and steam uncomfortable. Give yourself some time after a meal to fully enjoy the experience.
Stay hydrated (and skip the alcohol)
Hammams can get very hot, especially in the steam rooms. Drink plenty of water beforehand and avoid alcohol so you don’t feel lightheaded.
Prepare for the scrub (lol but real)
If it’s your first time, the full-body scrub might catch you off guard, but trust me, it’s worth it. Your skin will feel incredibly smooth afterward.
Bring minimal items
You’ll be given everything you need, including a robe, sandals, and a locker. Keep it simple and bring only the essentials.
Book in advance
This is one of Istanbul’s most popular experiences, and spots fill up quickly. Booking ahead ensures you get the time and services you want.
What to Wear to a Turkish Hammams in Istanbul
If it’s your first time visiting a Turkish bath, you might be wondering what to wear, and the good news is, you don’t need to overthink it.
When you arrive, you’ll be provided with essentials like a robe, sandals, and usually disposable underwear. Some hammams also allow you to wear a swimsuit if you feel more comfortable, especially in mixed-gender settings.
That said, parts of the experience may involve partial or full nudity, depending on the hammam and service you choose. Towels are often used for coverage when moving between areas, but it’s important to feel mentally prepared ahead of time.
My advice?
Come in comfortable clothing that’s easy to remove, and don’t bring much with you. Everything you need for the experience will be provided.
Turkish Hammam Etiquette for First-Time Visitors
If you’ve never been to a Turkish hammam before, understanding a few basic etiquette tips will help you feel more comfortable and confident during your visit.
Respect the space
Hammams are meant to be relaxing and peaceful. Keep noise to a minimum and be mindful of others sharing the space.
Follow your attendant’s lead
Your attendant will guide you through each step of the process. Trust the flow of the experience; it may feel unfamiliar at first, but that’s part of it.
Be comfortable with the process
The scrub, foam wash, and overall ritual are hands-on and personal. It’s completely normal, and the staff are professionals who do this every day.
Tipping is appreciated
While not required, tipping is a kind gesture if you enjoyed your service. Around 10–20% is a good guideline.
Take your time
Don’t rush the experience. A hammam is all about slowing down, relaxing, and embracing the moment, something that’s deeply rooted in Turkish culture.
