A carry-on and small backpack are all you need for a trip under five days. If you stay a week or longer, a carry-on still works— just remember to pack smart!
Istanbul is a hilly city with cobblestone streets and plenty of stairs, so lightweight luggage is key for easy mobility. My go-to combo was my American Tourister carry-on and Thule backpack, which made navigating our Airbnb’s winding stairs hassle-free.

- Spring (March–May) – Mild weather and blooming flowers, with highs reaching 22°C (72°F) by May.

Light Jacket: You can get away with a jean jacket or light coat. It will come in handy for cooler nights, during windy ferry rides, and when the temperature drops unexpectedly.
Long-Sleeve Shirt: Layering will come in handy depending on when you visit. If you’re visiting in the cooler months, consider packing a few long-sleeve shirts that fit under your jacket or sweater.
Comfortable Walking Sneakers: You’ll be walking a lot around Istanbul. Its cobblestone streets and hills weren’t something I expected, but I was glad I packed comfortable sneakers.
Sandals: If you’re visiting during the summer, bringing a few pairs of comfortable sandals will be suitable for walking around, visiting a Hammam, or going to the beach.
Tops: Pack a mix of breathable, modest tops for layering and keeping cool while respecting cultural norms.
Lightweight Pants: This is where I got to have some fun with my wardrobe. I packed several lightweight, colorful pairs of comfortable, stylish pants that were perfect for exploring, especially in mosques where modest attire is required.
Skirts: Bring flowy, knee-length, or longer skirts to keep you cool while making sure you’re dressed appropriately for cultural sites.
Dresses: Consider bringing easy-to-pack, stylish, and comfortable dresses perfect for day-to-night transitions. I packed a few maxi dresses, which came in handy!

Scarf: A scarf is necessary for visiting mosques, staying warm, or adding a stylish touch to your outfit. If you forget your scarf, some mosques, like the Blue Mosque, provide loaner scarves, but it’s best to bring your own.
Bag: My go-to bag while traveling is a fanny pack. I prefer them because my belongings are secure while navigating the busy streets, trains, and markets.
Hat: A hat is a must-have for sun protection, especially in summer. A wide-brim hat adds extra coverage.
Sunglasses: Istanbul gets sunny year-round, so bring a few pairs of sunnies.

Sunscreen & lip balm (the sun can be intense, even in cooler months).
