Check out the Nike Centre for Arts and Culture
Lagos has this energy that can’t be contained. It feels so magical. I especially felt that magical feeling while visiting the Nike Centre for Arts and Culture in Lekki.
I was overwhelmed (in a good way) by all the intricate and colorful paintings, textiles, and eclectic sculptures that surrounded the property. While I felt like I could’ve spent all day taking in the collections and reading every description in detail, 2 hours was enough time to take in and appreciate the artwork that spanned 4 floors.
Before leaving the gallery, I took a selfie with a piece that spoke to me. If you’re interested in taking a picture of the artwork, make sure you’re in it! For copyright reasons and to protect the integrity of the craftsmanship, the gallery prohibits taking videos and photos of just the artwork.
The center also offers private tours to give you an intimate chance to learn about the artists and their artwork in greater detail!
Visit the Lekki Conservation Center
I always welcome the opportunity to be outdoors and appreciate mother nature’s gifts. One of my most memorable highlights was visiting the Lekki Conservation Center and walking across Africa’s longest canopy!
I loved it and would totally do it again! Even though I was a bit chicken to walk across the six canopies all over 22 feet high, the 360 views of the city above the tree tops made me forget about being a fraidy cat.
Insider Tip: The conservation center is home to lots of mona monkeys. While they are cute, they aren’t very friendly. I recommend not getting too close and simply admiring them from afar.
Other than visiting the Nike Art Gallery and the Lekki Conservation Center, different attractions and sights you can’t miss include:
- Check out the Lekki Craft Market
- Ride a Keke (A keke is a motorized tricycle and the most popular mode of street transportation)
- Go to the Terra Kulture Center
- Spend the morning at the Nigeria National Museum
- Enjoy a musical performance at the Afrika Shrine
Experience a traditional wedding
Attending my first traditional wedding, also known as Igba Nkwu (the wine-carrying ceremony), in the village in Imo state, located in southeastern Nigeria, was one of the most extraordinary and gratifying experiences!
In less than 24 hours, I had a stunning dress made for a whopping $15, just in time for the festivities. If you’re lucky enough to be invited or crash a traditional wedding, you’re in for an unforgettable time that will turn you into a storyteller for years to come!
Dine at Shiro
On my last night in Lagos, I had a dazzling dinner at Shiro, located in the Landmark Centre in Victoria Islands. Whoever came up with the decoration concept of this Pan-Asian restaurant deserves a gold star!
I was mesmerized by the thoughtful details and influence of Asian culture. Not to mention the giant sculptures and welcoming ambiance were a real treat. The food and service were equally fantastic.
Admittedly, I wish I had discovered Shiro sooner. I would’ve eaten here every night! On my way out, I checked out the patio overlooking the ocean and made a mental note to sit outside for dinner during my next visit home!
