Cappadocia had been sitting at the top of my bucket list for years, and once I arrived, I immediately understood why. Picture hundreds of hot air balloons floating across the sky at sunrise, surreal landscapes filled with fairy chimneys, and cave hotels that feel like something out of a dream.
Of course, I came for the hot air balloon experience, but what I quickly realized is that there’s so much more to Cappadocia than just that moment in the sky.
If you’re planning a trip and want to make the most of your time, I’ve put together the perfect 3-day Cappadocia itinerary to help you experience the highlights, hidden gems, and everything in between without feeling rushed.

How to Get to Cappadocia
If you’re flying from Istanbul, the most convenient way to reach Cappadocia is to fly into Nevşehir Airport (NAV), which is the closest airport to Göreme. However, if you’re coming from another part of Turkey or internationally, you may also find more flight options into Kayseri Airport (ASR), which is about an hour away.
From either airport, you can take a taxi or arrange a private transfer to your hotel or accommodations in Cappadocia.
Tip: If you’re taking a taxi from the airport, avoid making any additional stops along the way. Some drivers may suggest detours to “see sights” while keeping the meter running. This happened to us on the way to Göreme, and we ended up with a much higher fare than expected. To avoid this, be clear that you want to go directly to your accommodation.

Getting Around Cappadocia
Getting around Cappadocia mostly depends on where you choose to stay, but the good news is that it’s fairly easy to navigate, especially if you’re following a 3-day Cappadocia itinerary.
If you’re staying in Göreme, which is the most popular and centrally located area, you likely won’t need to rent a car. Göreme is very walkable, with plenty of restaurants, cafés, and shops nearby. For attractions outside of town, you can easily rely on taxis or guided tours.
Uçhisar offers a quieter, more elevated experience with stunning views of the valleys and fairy chimneys. While it’s not as walkable as Göreme, it’s perfect if you’re looking for a more peaceful stay. If you choose to stay here, you may want to consider arranging taxis in advance or booking tours, as transportation options can be more limited, especially later in the evening.
Ürgüp is another great option and offers a mix of local charm and accessibility, with plenty of restaurants, cafés, and cave hotels. Like Göreme, it’s relatively walkable, but if you plan to explore beyond the town, renting a car or using taxis is a good option.
That said, for most travelers spending 3 days in Cappadocia, renting a car isn’t necessary. Many of the top experiences, like the Red and Green Tours, include hotel pick-up and drop-off, making it easy to explore without worrying about transportation.
Where to Stay in Cappadocia
Choosing where to stay in Cappadocia can shape your experience, especially if you’re only following a 3-day Cappadocia itinerary.
The three main areas to consider are Göreme, Uçhisar, and Ürgüp, each offering a slightly different vibe depending on how you like to travel.
Göreme is the most popular and centrally located option. It’s perfect if you want to be within walking distance of restaurants, cafés, and tour pick-up points.
Uçhisar is quieter and more elevated, offering some of the best panoramic views in Cappadocia. It’s ideal if you’re looking for a more relaxed, scenic stay.
Ürgüp blends local charm with convenience, featuring great restaurants, boutique cave hotels, and easy access to nearby attractions.
No matter where you stay, one thing you don’t want to miss is the experience of staying in a cave hotel, it’s part of what makes Cappadocia so unique.

Best Time to Visit Cappadocia
The best time to visit Cappadocia depends on the experience you’re looking for. I visited in May, and it was the perfect balance, cool mornings, warm afternoons, and fewer crowds than peak summer months.
High Season (April – October):
Spring and early summer are some of the best times to visit, especially from April to June, when the weather is mild and ideal for exploring. If a hot air balloon ride is on your list, be sure to book it for your first or second full day to allow flexibility in case of weather cancellations. July and August are the busiest and hottest months, with larger crowds and higher prices. September and October are also great options, offering beautiful weather with slightly fewer crowds.
Off-Season (November – February):
These months bring cooler temperatures, fewer tourists, and a more peaceful experience. You may encounter rain or snow, which can increase the chances of balloon cancellations, but it’s also a great time to enjoy Cappadocia at a slower pace and fully experience the cozy charm of staying in a cave hotel.
How to Plan the Perfect 3-Day Cappadocia Itinerary
Day 1- Arrival + Sunset Views in Cappadocia
Your 3-day Cappadocia itinerary can be as packed or as relaxed as you want, but for your first day, I recommend easing into it and simply taking in your new surroundings.
Travel days can be exhausting, so I like to keep things light. After checking in, I usually take some time to explore the hotel, do a quick room tour, freshen up, and even rest a bit before heading out. It’s also a great time to connect with the staff and get local recommendations.
If you’re staying in Göreme, take a stroll through the town center and get familiar with the area. You’ll find plenty of restaurants, cafés, and small shops, perfect for picking up water and any essentials you’ll need during your stay.
Once you’ve settled in and grabbed a bite to eat, make your way to Göreme Sunset Point or Uçhisar Castle for your first Cappadocia sunset.
If you’re a sunset lover like me, you’ll appreciate watching the sun dip behind the valleys as the sky transforms into soft, cotton candy hues. It’s the perfect introduction to the magic of Cappadocia.
To end your evening, head to Seten Restaurant Cappadocia for an authentic Anatolian dinner. The food is incredible, and the views overlooking Göreme and the surrounding valleys make it the perfect way to wrap up your first night.

Day 2 – Hot Air Balloon + Red Tour
Day 2 of your 3-day Cappadocia itinerary is easily the most exciting and starts very early.
Morning Activity: Hot Air Balloon Ride
Your morning begins with a hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia, typically launching over Göreme or Love Valley, depending on the company you book with.
I went with Rainbow Balloons and had an exceptional experience from start to finish. If you’re unsure which company to choose, your hotel can provide great recommendations.

Keep in mind that balloon rides are weather-dependent. If it’s too windy or rainy, flights can be canceled. I highly recommend booking your ride for your first or second morning to give yourself flexibility in case you need to reschedule. Prices can also increase depending on demand, so planning ahead is key.

Breakfast at Your Hotel
After your unforgettable balloon ride, head back to your hotel for a traditional Turkish breakfast. These spreads are truly next level, think fresh bread, cheeses, fruits, eggs, and more.
I stayed at Local Cave Hotel and Sato Cave Hotel, and both had incredible breakfast experiences. Easily a 10/10.

Afternoon Activity: Red Tour
After breakfast, take some time to rest and recharge before heading out for the Red Tour, which covers some of the most iconic sights in Cappadocia.
Love Valley
Located near Göreme and Uçhisar, Love Valley is known for its unique fairy chimneys formed by volcanic erosion. It’s one of the most photographed spots in Cappadocia.
Pasabag (Monks Valley)
Situated between Göreme and Avanos, this valley is famous for its mushroom-shaped fairy chimneys, some with multiple caps on a single stem. It’s especially beautiful early in the morning or around sunset.
Devrent Valley (Imagination Valley)
This valley is known for its rock formations that resemble animals and other shapes. It’s a fun and unique stop that feels completely different from the other valleys.

Activity Evening: Dinner + Relax
After a full day of exploring, head back to your hotel to relax and freshen up before dinner.
For an unforgettable meal, I highly recommend Pumpkin Göreme Restaurant and Art Gallery. This family-owned spot was a highlight of my trip. I had the Testi Kebab, a traditional slow-cooked dish made with beef, lamb, or vegetables in a sealed clay pot, then cracked open at the table.
It was easily one of my favorite meals in Cappadocia. The service was exceptional, and the owner even gifted us hot-air-balloon keychains, which made the experience even more memorable.

Be sure to make a reservation in advance; it’s a popular spot and fills up quickly.
Day 3 – Cappadocia Sights + Explore Göreme
Start your morning bright and early by catching the hot air balloons floating over Göreme Valley. Even if you’ve already done the balloon ride, seeing them from the ground is just as magical. It was one of my favorite moments, and despite being tired, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Afterward, head to breakfast at your hotel for another delicious and filling Turkish spread. If you’re anything like me, breakfast quickly becomes one of the highlights of your stay.
Morning Activity: Pottery Workshop
Once you’re ready for the day, start with a visit to Kapadokya Seramik for a pottery workshop. Cappadocia is known for its ceramics, and this is a great way to learn about the traditional techniques that have made the region famous. You’ll also have the chance to purchase handmade pieces, which make perfect souvenirs.
Afternoon Activity: Kayasehir Underground City + Pigeon Valley
Kayasehir Underground City
Next, head to Kayasehir, Nevşehir’s underground rock town. This expansive archaeological site covers over 437,000 square meters and features a hilltop castle from the Ottoman Empire along with a hillside living complex. It’s one of those unique experiences that really gives you a deeper appreciation for the region’s history.
Pigeon Valley
From there, make your way to Pigeon Valley (Güvercinlik Valley), one of the most scenic spots in Cappadocia. Known for its panoramic views, hiking trails, and historic pigeon houses carved into the rock, it’s a must-visit. I had never seen anything like it and truly loved my time here.
If you do anything on this 3-day Cappadocia itinerary beyond the hot air balloon ride, make sure Pigeon Valley is on your list.

Evening Activity: Explore Göreme + Dinner
After a full day of exploring, head back to your hotel to relax before your final evening.
Before dinner, spend some time wandering through downtown Göreme. The streets are lined with shops selling beautiful Turkish lanterns, textiles, and souvenirs, perfect for picking up a few last-minute items.
For your final dinner, head to Göreme Restaurant, a popular spot right on the main street. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is lively, and you may even catch some live music, which adds to the overall experience.

I ordered the Testi Kebab here as well, and it did not disappoint. We actually came back another day for snacks and drinks and ended up chatting with the owner, who was incredibly welcoming.

3-Day Cappadocia Itinerary: What I’d Do Differently
I loved my time in Cappadocia. It’s one of those places that was high on my bucket list the moment I saw the hot air balloons floating over Love Valley. It was one of those experiences where, no matter what I needed, I could get it.
I spent 4 nights in Cappadocia and felt it was too long. Initially, I was attracted to visiting the area because of the hot air balloons, and once I did that on the second day, I felt like I could have flown back to Istanbul or another part of Turkey. However, after visiting the region, I was glad I had stayed the extra days to explore.
Another thing I’d do differently is not to work remotely. While it wasn’t entirely terrible, I did experience brief periods when the internet at my hotel cut out during meetings, which was a bit disruptive.
Additionally, Turkey is a Muslim country, which means prayer is 5 times a day. Our hotels were close to the town’s mosques, so during meetings you could hear the call to prayer.
Again, these incidents weren’t the end of the world by any means, but they were a reminder that perhaps my visit should have been purely a pleasure, without the business.
Not taking a taxi from the airport to our cave hotel. Our taxi driver took us all over the place and posed it as offering us to take us sightseeing, unbeknownst to us, he never stopped the meter.
It took me until the third stop to realize we were being charged for each stop and the time we spent at each location.
On our way back to the airport, we booked an airport shuttle for 13 euros per person, which was much more affordable than 50 euros per person!
Conclusion – Lady Chin’s Two Cents
Overall, I can’t recommend Cappadocia enough. If you’re visiting Turkey, make room for a 3-day Cappadocia itinerary, it’s one of those places that stays with you long after you leave.
